High Voltage Transformer oil sampling – the right way

Jamestech know the importance of keeping your plant running at optimum levels.

To ensure the Electrical system is healthy and operating efficiently, Jamestech have developed several short courses that we can provide to assist your staff in analysing site systems and limit potential failures.

Jamestech have recently developed and delivered and 3 day course on:
“High Voltage Transformer Oil Sampling and Testing”

Transformers are undoubtedly one of the most valuable assets when discussing Electrical systems. When maintained correctly they will remain serviceable for many decades.

It is the job of the Electrical staff to understand the working principles of power transformers and the subsequent maintenance and testing procedures that are required to keep them serviceable.

Poorly maintained power transformers can result in catastrophic failure of the unit, with the potential to cause major damage to other substation plant equipment and network outages. Also, when failures occur, the capital required to replace this vital infrastructure, represents a substantial financial burden.

Regular sampling and testing of insulation oil taken from transformers is a valuable technique in a preventative maintenance program and needs to be performed correctly.

The High Voltage Transformer Oil Sampling and Testing Instruction Course is intended to provide an outline of methods to achieve a 50 year life from transformers.

The course takes the participants through:
* the 8 tests of a transformers oil insulation system
* provide methods of determining the factors which are at work decaying that insulation system
* looks briefly at external pressures shortening a transformers life.

Practical site instruction includes:
* Review of sites existing tests and diagnosis of past results
* Present diagnosis of the transformer oil testing results and information on sending samples to testing laboratories.

Both Ron Ashley and myself recently completed training for Hidden Valley mine in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. The Course was delivered over 3 days for Tradesmen, Supervisors and Engineers.

Attached in the photo at Hidden Valley is Ken Cryer, Nicholas Labote, Hidden Valley’s Electrical Reliability Engineer and four of the trainees.

Jamestech thanks Hidden Valley operations for the opportunity to provide this training to HVO staff and hope it shall assist in prolonging the life of their High Voltage Transformers.

Jamestech prioritises Electrical Safety.
